small foundation with a big impact

looking back

I will be retiring from my position on the board of Happy Watoto as of 1 January 2018.

I have been active for Happy Watoto for 12 years, as a member of the board, and for 8 years as its chairman, and it has been a great pleasure. Over that period we have grown from a small foundation with a number of ad hoc projects into a foundation which has a clear mission and a vision, and a structural approach to achieving its objectives. It is an approach that has made a real difference to the lives of deprived children.

The first children from the project’s early years, who are now independent and working, are proof of its success.During this period I came to know more and more about the people and children; those 32 trips to Tanzania were hard work, but they were always extremely satisfying and inspirational. It is a pleasure to see that the project is now being led by two Tanzanians who came up through our own ranks.

Of course, this work has been made possible by the help of all those people who support the development of the children who are in our care, and I would like to thank them all once more! Also my fellow board members, who through the years have ensured that we have continued to optimize and improve: I have gained so much from our inspiring meetings and brain storming sessions.
The board has since been revamped, and there is new blood, which I find provides a huge energy boost to the organisation. There is no shortage of new plans.

The involvement and professionalism of the current board ensure that I have no qualms about stepping down from the board. It goes without saying that I will continue to work on behalf happy Watoto, as one of the foundation’s ambassadors. I also plan to visit Tanzania on a fairly regular basis; the project is close to my heart, and I could never entirely let it go!
