Schools reopen after 3 months lockdown and appreciation letter from Ngorika Happy Watoto School

Tanzania is the first country in East Africa to open schools and not close the city. Children in the East African country of Tanzania went back to school last week, after three months of closure due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the U.S.-based Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, Tanzania has reported 509 COVID-19 cases and 21 deaths. The country stopped releasing COVID-19 related statistics from April 29.

The Ngorika Happy Watoto school has been open again since Monday, June 29th. About 95% of the children were present on the first day, which is a high percentage for Tanzania. All the children received training from the teachers about COVID-19 rules in the school. There is a large, almost automatic hand wash machine at the entrance of the school, where four children can wash their hands at the same time. Classes 4 and 7 go to school for an additional two hours a day because these classes have to take exams.

From the head of the Ngorika Happy Watoto School, Dr. Jonas Michael, the foundation has received an appreciation letter to thank the Dutch, German and local board and the local management team for their efforts during the COVID-19 crisis (see link  to the letter). We would also express our appreciation and thank our sponsors for additional support received.
