small foundation with a big impact

Dick’s first impressions

I have been asked to become the chairman of friends of Tanzania. It is a role I take very seriously, because that is what this organisation deserves. That is why I took time to consider the request carefully and to delve into the material and get to know people before I agreed to accept the position.

I began by getting to know each individual board member here in the Netherlands, so that I could get acquainted with their motive and vision. Late in February I travelled with them to visit projects on location. There I met with all the managers and other relevant people and gained some insight into how incredibly motivated they are in their work. But even more importantly, I saw many children in their school and living environment, and saw them beaming with happiness. That alone is a sufficient reward for the wonderful work that Friends of Tanzania does. I was impressed with the projects, with the state of the homes and schools, and with the visible willingness and discipline of staff and pupils, and their commitment to creating a pleasant living environment.

Some people in my own circles wondered if this wasn’t just “a drop in the bucket”? Tanzania’s problems, and those of Africa, are indeed bigger than this project. But we do in fact help hundreds of children who are virtually without hope find a better future. That’s a wonderful thing, and I want to be a part of it.
