small foundation with a big impact

financing of internet tower

In February we received good news from a fellow foundation regarding the financing of our internet tower. Internet is extremely important for our primary school. Because PC education is not part of the required school curriculum, offering it to the children at our schools can give them a head start.

We received a large number of laptops from the Zandvoort Lions Club in 2012, and lessons programs were installed on them with the support of Viafrica. The Lions Club also paid for the salary and training of Simon, who was temporarily hired as an IT teacher. Simon’s job was to familiarize the other teachers with these programs so that they could be integrated into the lesson plan. However, because the internet signal was too weak, we decided at the end of 2013 to tap into an American initiative aimed at building internet towers. We did not have funding at the time, but a promised donation will now cover the cost.

There is one remaining challenge: a permanent connection to the electricity grid. Another foundation has already promised to finance the cost of this connection, the provider’s tender has been approved and work is underway. However, like many things in Tanzania, the completion of this project will require a great deal of patience and tactful manoeuvring.
Until then, the PCs will have to rely on the electricity from the generator, and sometimes a planned PC lesson will have to be cancelled.
